Rebeckas berättelse / Rebecka´s story

Here you are Torbjorn: finally my story!!!

Today I tried to remain as impartial to the comments and stories already flowing from the source of this mask. I watched the video starting afresh: setting aside the memories I created during my brief visit to Sweden, the sounds of the tools against wood, the struggle and surrender an actor undergoes when placing a mask upon their face to become a different character. Or did I? The music playing in the background of video number 15 added a certain element to the story unfolding in my mind.

Here is what I have: a female mask filled with curiosity and surprise. She has experienced great loss in her life. A figure which supported her and taught her much of what she has learned about herself and the world has passed away. In this loss she is forced to rebuild herself. Through a struggle with the sense of loneliness and loss she has developed a delicate elegance. Seeing the photos of the mask in its primary stages before the metal material was finished and while a "journey of the masks" label branded her face, an image was created in my mind of this woman rebuilding herself through the scars and new elements in her life. There is a beautiful contrast between the natural materials versus the more manmade. I see her living amongst society, quietly coming to terms with this loss and finding her own individual ways of becoming stronger and whole. I believe this story is strongly influenced by the exterior of the mask, and the beauty and eeriness of the melody playing in the background…I would be curious to see while the artists begin to play with the mask, what humor arrives with this creation.
