The Piece of Alder tree that soon will become a mask
Våren 2005 spelade jag på Ljungby berättarfestival min föreställning ”Skråpukens berättelser”. Föreställningen avslutas med att jag framför en presentation av min tolkning av den traditionella Grönländska maskdansen. Presentationen är mycket enkel, en improvisation i stunden. Ändå dröjer sig en man i 55 årsåldern kvar, han väntar tills alla har gått. Så kommer han upp till mig för att tacka. I det ögonblick som mannen tar min hand brister det, han gråter hejdlöst, men försäkrar samtidigt att han är lycklig, lycklig över det som händer med honom. Vad såg han? Vad väckte denna enkla presentation för berättelse i honom?
Denna och andra upplevelser har väckt min önskan att undersöka vad masker skapar för berättelser och upplevelser idag?
“Två speciellt designade och utformade masker skickas under ett år iväg på en resa runtom i Norden. Tanken är att den skall hamna hos ett mycket brett urval av konstnärer. Det kan vara filmare, författare, regissörer, bildkonstnärer, tonsättare m.m.
Varje konstnär kommer att erbjudas möjligheten att under en månad fritt använda och tolka dessa masker utifrån sin egen professionalitet. Enda förbehållet är att en redovisning i någon form sker offentligt. Där önskar jag närvara för att dokumentera såväl presentationen som reaktioner hos aktörer och åskådare.
Allt material skall sammanställas i en dokumentärfilm om hur dessa masker på sin resa gett upphov till nya berättelser, som i sin tur bildar en sammanhållande berättelse. “
“Maskernas resa” är ett konstnärligt forskningsprojekt som vill undersöka hur masker i vår samtid väcker berättelser. Där varje upplevelse i högsta grad är personlig och utgör en del av en ständigt pågående berättelse.
" Kan en abstraktion lockas oss att uppleva vår egen verklighet starkare än när vi försöker efterlikna verkligheten?"

Blir du intresserad ? Vet du om någon som kanske skulle kunna vara intresserad över att få husera dessa masker och arbeta med dom under en månad ? Låt mig veta detta isåfall ! Kanske kan det vara möjligt att ordna !

” In the spring of 2005 I was performing my show ”Tales from the mask” at a festival in southern Sweden. I ended the show as I usually do with my interpretation of the traditional greenlandic maskdance.1 The presentation of this mask is very simple, just a short improvisation. After the performance has reached it’s end there is one man standing in the back of the room, waiting for everyone to leave. When we finally are alone he comes up to thank me for the show. In the moment he takes my hand everything brakes for him, he starts to cry in the same time assuring me that he is happy, happy for the things happening inside him.” I was stunned ! - What happened inside this man? - What did he see? - What caused such a deep experience for this man from my simple maskdance?
How can an abstract expression as the mask give such true experiences , somewhat more true than naturalistic performances does ?

Two masks will be made especially for this project, they will be sent out on a journey amongst artists in the different Scandinavian countries. Each artist will be offered the possibility to use these masks for a month, interpretate them as they want. The only request is a public presentation of their work. I will film all of these presentations and part of the process. This will later be edited into a documentary film about the journey of the masks.

I come from a family of woodworkers on my father's side in America. My family owns a furniture business now. My father though, finally branched away from building traditional things out of wood such as furniture and became a wood sculptor.
Originally, he built huge hulking sculptures out of walnut trees and oak trees much like Andy Goldsworthy. Then, he combined the sculptures with live animals. I also remember growing up he made wood electric guitars for a rock band.
I was given the choice to join the family business or go to college. I chose college.
Years later, I found myself in need of a day job and went to work again for my family, surrounded in our warehouses full of wood.
Although I have turned my back on making things out of wood, it is in my genes to always be close to it.
Watching how you are combining your artistry and craftsmanship with a medium that I am so familiar with is exciting and inspiring.
In the eastern tradition the wood element is often associated with anger, and I have often made the connection between the two in my family's relationship with wood.
There is always something that drives the anger though... fear... sadness. Much like the mask.
I can't wait to see how your project unfolds. I've got my popcorn and now, I'll just have to wait for your updates.
