VARFÖR / WHY ( comment by Gabrielle Houle )

Dags för ett nytt inlägg. Först skall jag berätta att inbjudningarna är ivägskickade. Usch så nervöst det kommer att vara en period nu. Kommer det att finnas ett intresse ? Vore ju tråkigt om historien får ett slut innan den ens har börjat på riktigt. 22 konstnärer får inom några dagar ett brev, en inbjudan att vara med på denna resa. Svårt att välja, men ville ha en spridning inom konstnärliga uttryck, geografisk hemvist och kön. Detta gjorde det ju delvis lättare, men ändå svårt. Hoppas bara att det inte sitter någon därute som läser denna blogg och väldigt gärna hade velat vara en av de inbjudna men inte sagt något. Det vore synd!

- Varför frågan varför ? Klart man funderar ibland på varför är man så korkad att man lägger ner ett sådant arbete på en mask, eller är det en mask? Är det ett smycke som vi dekorerar oss med, eller vad är det ? Vad är skillnaden mellan ett smycke och en mask ? Iklär vi oss inte smycket för att känna oss annorlunda? Att lyfta fram något speciellt från oss själva ?  Smycket kan ju ibland också vara laddat, ett rituellt laddat smycke, ett kors som ger tröst eller tillit. En mask bär på liknande egenskaper. Ett uttryck att beundra såväl som att inspireras av. Ytan som lockar handen att känna, materialet som lockar ögat att se, formen som får  fantasin att leka. Mask, smycke, mask .... vad är skillnaden ? Igår blev jag varse en annan typ av mask, en musikens frigörande mask. var och lyssnade på Jonas Francke-Bloms uruppförande av sitt nykomponerade Requiem. Som en mask som lockar fram känslan, som en frihetens mask fungerade denna musik, i sin skörhet såväl som i sin kraft. Det var vackert och så synd om er som inte fick vara med om detta. Ett musikaliskt smycke som jag skall bära med mig länge.

Time for a new entry on the blog. Before starting on the that I just want to announce that the invitations are mailed. Oh, it will now be several days of nervous waiting for the respons. Will there be enough interest? Would be so sad if the story ends before it really has started. 22 artists will in the next couple of days recieve an invitation to join this journey. It was not easy to choose which ones, but my want to get a wide range of artistic expressions, geographical spreadings and also a good balance of males and females made it a bit easier, but still. I do hope that there isn't someone out there following this blog who's having a strong desire to be one of the artists, and yet haven't said anything. it would be very sad. 

So-- why the question why ? Well, of course I get into those moments of questioning why  I'm doing all this. Why put so much work into just the making of a mask, or is it just a mask ?Is it a piece of jewellery that we wear? Using it as a decoration, or perhaps more than that. What is the difference between a mask and a piece of jewellery ? Aren't we dressing up with it to feel different, or to emphasize something we want to show from ourselves? The piece of jewellery can sometimes be a carrier of powers, or as a sacred expression, a cross that gives us comfort and trust.  The mask are similar in that. Both are an expression for admiration as well as  inspiration. The surface that are tempting the hand to touch it, the material that entice the eyes, the shape that attracts our imagination and makes our fantasy to a joyful play. The mask, the jewellery, the mask ....whats the difference ? Yesterday I was presented for another type of mask, the mask of the music, a mask of freedom. A friend of mine, Jonas Francke-Blom was conducting his own just composed Requiem. As the mask  attracts and inspires the innermost feelings, the music made the same effect. The music as a mask of freedom, creating the sence of being free to feel, inspired by the most fragile tones to the strongest powerful crescendos. It was magic, and it gave me several pieces of jewelleries to carry with me for a long time. 

Please also note this: I would love to get your stories or impressions on the first mask...really feel free to express what you want, don't be polite to me or have to much respect! Just tell from watching the last movie published here, the journey part 15.

"I agree that both the mask and the jewel can serve similar purposes. Adornment and make up in daily life can serve constructing our social mask, that is what we chose to present to others. The mask make evident all parts of our body, it acts like a magnifying glass; the jewel serve to highlight a thin neck, a nice hear cut, it matches with the eye colour or help to put emphasis on the glow of one's skin. Jewelry also conveys signification (engagement ring, religious symbol, etc). I wear long and bright earings when I am going out in clubs or shows with guys I like (they are my flirty jewelry!), and I wear small earing at work (they are my daily wear and yet they are used to display my feminity). So in both cases, the jewery and the mask can be used to reveal the character of someone (as fiction or reality). It puts forward certain aspects of whom is wearing them, and it is understood according to specific social codes. Ok, it is late and I am now thinking on the page."
