What is the past adding to the present ? How are we being influenced by the knowledge of the history ? How can the
heritage of the piece of Alder tree i use add to the stories created in this project ? Amongst the Natives of North America their is a strong belief that all masks created carries the spirits of their ancestors. Is this simply the knowledge that this tree has for many generations given shadow a hot day for long dead relatives. Perhaps being the place for romantic meetings, a
place for childrens playing. Is this knowledge enough to give us the sence of our ancestoral spirits in the tree? If this is the case, than this piece of alder tree from Norway is also filled with stories. From generations back, from the moment when this family came to look for a place where the sun is shining the most in all Norway. When they was given the chance to buy land, when they later built their house for vacation and recreation, generation after generation. They got to see new generations being born, and older pass on. Was this story ended in the moment I brought that piece of wood from Norway and put it in the freezer in my studio i Kungalv, Sweden ? Or is it still part of the same story, just making another direction? Can a story be born without it's past ? Every person following this project carry their own stories with them, everyone of you. Every one of you sees your own story, something I can't influence, just inspire. Every story belongs to a long chain of stories, but a chain that spreads in all directions, like branches on a tree.

The past and the present, and the many questions you present are beautiful! I have always felt strongly in the same beliefs as Native Americans and their intimate relationship with the natural world. As you mention, their belief that all masks created carry the spirits of their ancestors - in watching you create this mask from a fine piece of wood from a place in Norway where the sun shines the most, it is easy to see it’s spirit coming through…. with your artistic hands, and spirit, and being.
I do feel that all things in nature continue to hold and carry spirit, history and a story within. A piece of wood, a stone, a twig or leaf traveling with a stream, a pathway, the moon, sun, air, water. As it touches each of our lives the story continues. Sometimes it may be more within reach than at other times.
Same story or a new direction? Are you still a part of the same story this Alder tree carries? Adding your past and journey to the present? It is all wonderful to contemplate! I ask and seek ways of being in touch with these things. To keep the spirit free and open and traveling!
Having the opportunity to witness this project and the travels of the mask, even from this distance of many miles, is a true pleasure and inspiration. To create my own story with it as it unfolds, and to be a part of a branch on this tree is a genuine gift.
Thank you Torbjörn!
May your travels be with much peace and ease.
Warmly,
Sarah
It is good to see you speeding about with your motor - sometimes it is good to leave the paddles behind ;)
chop sticks or fork?
latex mask or wood?
paddle or motor?
